Steps to Become a Speech-Language Pathologist in Wyoming
To be licensed in Speech-Language Pathology by the state of Wyoming, one must have the appropriate training and experience in Speech-Language Pathology. To be a Speech-Language Pathologist, one also needs a degree in education.
Preparing for admission into an accredited BS degree should start early. Since most programs have limited space, it is important to maintain a high grade point average in high school and take science and math classes.
The next thing to do is to select the correct program, preferably a program that has accreditation in audiology and speech-language pathology through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Some people earn a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) as pre-professional preparation for a graduate program, and then attend one of the other online or campus based speech pathology schools in Wyoming to complete their MS of Speech-Language Pathology.
However, many select a university that combines the undergraduate and graduate programs. This combined program is designed to prepare students for Wyoming licensing and to qualify for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence.
Students must obtain a background check to be admitted into the MS of Speech-Language Pathology program, so having had problems in the past can limit options for this career path.
Wyoming Speech-Language Pathology licenses must be renewed every year. All licenses expire at midnight on Dec. 31 of each year. Renewal requires 12 actual contact hours. Some areas of continuing education that are allowed include in-services provided by professional organizations, university coursework, scientific or educational lectures, and articles published in state or national journals.
Through campus or online programs, aspiring Speech Pathologists in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs, Wyoming may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Campbell County Memorial Hospital, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Saint John's Medical Center and Wyoming Medical Center.
