Substance abuse counselor certification in Texas is regulated by the Department of State Health Services – Community Mental Health branch (DSHS).
In Texas, counselors treating mental health and addiction issues are referred to as Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC). Before you can apply for certification as an LCDC, you must complete the following:
- Registration as a Counselor Intern (CI)
- An associate degree in human behavior
- Work at least 4,000 hours in a clinical setting treating chemically dependent patients
- Pass both the written and oral examination
Most states require a bachelor or master degree in order to be certifiable. However, the State of Texas is different in that the 4,000-hour work requirement can be waived for professionals holding a bachelor degree or higher. If you have an associate degree, you must complete the 4,000 hours of supervised work in order to be issued LCDC status.
