Substance abuse counselor training in Michigan is primarily offered through home-study programs, in-service training providers, federal government agencies, professional associations, colleges, community colleges, and universities. In terms of post-secondary education, substance abuse counselors are expected to hold at least a master degree in a behavioral health-related discipline. All degrees must be acquired from an institute that is accredited by an agency like the Council on Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education.

Luckily, there are six different schools in Michigan that offer education and training programs in substance abuse and addiction counseling. By graduating from one of these programs, students are earn the following awards: Bachelor of Science in Addiction Studies, Certificate in Addiction Studies, Master of Arts in Addiction Counseling, Associate in Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment, Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies, Master in Rehabilitation Counseling, and Doctor in Counseling Psychology, to name a few. Some specific three-credit courses found within some of these programs include: Addictive Populations, Drugs and Behavior, Recovery Processes, Chemical Dependency and Youth, Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Treatment, and Assessment, Referral and Treatment Methods. These programs are all government approved and typically prepare students for written examination and eventual certification. An internship or practicum portion is usually included within the curriculum as well.
