Substance Abuse Counselor Training in Wisconsin - WI

Wisconsin requires individuals to complete intensive studies through courses, seminars and presentations that will well equip them to become substance abuse counselors who are skilled and competent practitioners.  Substance abuse counselor training in the state mandates the completion of educational requirements in correspondence with the various roles within the field, which include substance abuse counselor in-training, substance abuse counselor and clinical substance abuse counselor.

Substance abuse counselor in-training requires the completion of 100 hours of specialized education to ensure a fundamental understanding of the field.  Specifically, core curriculum requirements include:

• Substance Abuse Professional Responsibility (20 hours)
• Substance Abuse Assessment (15 hours)
• Substance Abuse Counseling (15 hours)
• Substance Abuse Education (15 hours)
• Substance Abuse Case Management (10 hours)
• Related Electives (25 hours)

Substance abuse counselor training in Wisconsin requires 360 hours of specialized education.  Sixty hours in each of the core requirements for substance abuse counselor in-training must be completed in either a comprehensive program or an approved degree program to ensure a more seamless transition from classroom to career.

Individuals who wish to be clinical substance abuse counselors must complete the same training requirements as substance abuse counselors as well as graduate from an accredited institution with an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in behavioral science.
