Tennessee Personal Trainer Education

Personal trainers are specialized fitness workers that work with one or a few clients at a time.  Nationwide, employment of fitness workers is expected to increase by 29% in the next 10 years, mostly due to increased interest in physical health by aging baby boomers and memberships in country and health clubs.  The obsession over physical fitness has been seen in Tennessee over the past 10 years.  On the whole, the number of fitness trainers and aerobics instructors has increased in Tennessee by almost 12%.  However, these statistics are difficult to track, as most personal training jobs are secondary to other professions such as school teaching and group fitness training.  Nine percent of all fitness workers are self-employed, and most of these are personal trainers that are hired for temporary periods.  However, most personal trainers work in either recreation centers or for civic organizations.  The willingness to pay more money for personal training and fitness has also gone up.  The mean annual salary for fitness workers in Tennessee has increased by over 70% since 1999.

The most practical education for aspiring personal trainers usually comes from classes and sessions under other fitness instructors and trainers.  Most people who become physical trainers are usually highly motivated students and clients that end up taking more interest in the occupation.

However, as far as formal education, many certification agencies, not to mention employers, require at least a high school diploma.  If personal trainers are interested in moving up to managerial positions, then a bachelor’s degree is highly recommended.  Some germane Tennessee personal training courses at the university level would include kinesiology, physical education, or exercise science.
