The United States Department of Education recognizes the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) as the only accreditation agency that is able to accredit physical therapy assistant (PTA) programs. In the state of Tennessee, a physical therapy assistant must acquire 20 hours of continuing education within a 2-year renewal period. Four of the required hours must cover the topics of ethics and jurisprudence education. Examples of continuing education subjects include, aquatics, geriatrics, hand rehabilitation, pediatrics, sports physical therapy, and women's health.
