Upon earning your CAAHEP or ABHES accredited degree or diploma through a Texas medical assistant school, submit all necessary application forms to a nationally recognized certification board or agency, such as American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.org) to schedule a CMA certification examination. There is a $125 application fee for members of the AAMA and for recent graduates (within 12 months of graduation), and a $250 fee non-members or graduates who have exceeded the 12 month grace period. Certain documentation may be asked to be provided with the application. Applicants are notified within 45 days of submission to schedule an examination, which are held year round. After successfully passing the certification examination, the designation of Certified Medical Assistant is established.

In Texas, Certified Medical Assistants must maintain certification after completion of a Texas medical assistant school, to uphold the CMA credential. Recertification, which is required every 5 years for medical assistants, can be executed in to ways: take and pass the current CMA certification examination administered by the Certifying Board of the AAMA to recertify, or acquire at least 60 AAMA approved continuing education units, or (CEU'S).
