How to Become an MRI Technician in Utah

The state of Utah has several MRI technician training programs. Most MRI techs are actually radiologists who have completed a post-primary certification in MRI. Although it is possible to pursue a degree specifically for MRI without completing training in radiography, sonography, nuclear medicine, or radiation therapy, very few Utah MRI technician training programs are structured that way.

In general, certification in this field will include mastery of the following skills:

• Knowledge about electromagnets, magnetic fields, and computers
• Thorough understanding of human anatomy
• Ability to independently perform procedures with skill and efficiency
• Basic patient care responsibilities, such as sterile procedures, administration of contrast materials, IV insertion, emergency procedures, and dealing with patient discomfort such as claustrophobia

Utah is one of the forty states in the U.S. that requires MRI technicians to be licensed before starting their careers. In this state, you must pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) examination and hold certification from the Radiology Technologist Licensing Board
of the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing in order to practice as an MRI tech.

The best jobs for MRI techs in Utah are located in Salt Lake City, West Valley, Provo and West Jordon. Among the top hospitals in the state for this field are Intermountain Medical Center, Saint Mark's Hospital, University of Utah Health Care and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
