Utah Pharmacy Tech School – UT

In order for pharmacy technicians to obtain an occupational license to practice in Utah, they must first complete the necessary education and clinical training requirements set forth by the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). All pharmacy technicians must complete a program of education that incorporates at least 180 hours of supervised practical training. According to the DOPL, this pharmacy technician program should instruct in the following subjects: legal aspects of pharmacy practice; hygiene and aseptic techniques; terminology and symbols; pharmaceutical calculations; identification of drugs by trade and generic names, and therapeutic classifications; filling of orders and prescriptions including packaging and labeling; ordering, restocking, and maintaining drug inventory; computer applications in pharmacy; over-the-counter products (e.g. cough and cold, nutritional, analgesics, allergy, diabetic, and first aid).

Currently, there are three main ways that pharmacy technicians can complete the education and training needed to qualify for licensure in Utah. One way is to have prior experience working at least 1,000 hours as a licensed pharmacy technician in another state within the last twelve months. Another way is to receive education and training under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist in an approved Utah pharmacy. The last way is complete a formal education program for pharmacy technicians. Students that prefer to gain education and training from a pharmacy technician school in Utah should research programs that are available at technical institutes, technical colleges, private colleges, and community colleges. Those looking for campus-based programs may find opportunities in cities such as Provo, St. George, Logan, Kaysville, Murray, West Valley City, Ogden, Layton, and Salt Lake City. By graduating from a pharmacy tech school in Utah, students can earn a Certificate in Pharmacy Technician, an Associate of Science in Pharmacy Technician, and/or a Diploma in Pharmacy Technician. Many students are also earning their education and training through online schools.
