How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in West Virginia

  1. In West Virginia pharmacy technician certification programs online prepare graduates for passing either of the three exams required in this state:  the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE), the Errors and Omissions exam, and the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX).  You can prepare by participating in an accredited program as decided by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) while working in a pharmacy, or to work in a pharmacy and prepare independently through whatever means work for you, such as a combination of working in a pharmacy and using practice tests and preparatory materials.  There is a background check.  No one with any criminal convictions in the last 5 years or with any drug or pharmacy-related felonies in his or her past.  You must have a high school diploma or GED certification to register for the tests.

  2. There are two organizations that administer these tests throughout the country: the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians.  You will have to contact either one of these organizations to register and take the tests.
  3. Take these tests.  You must score at least 70% on the MSJE and at least 75% on the Errors and Omissions Exam to receive licensure in West Virginia.  NABP sets the criteria for passing the NAPLEX exam. 
  4. Contact the WVBP to ensure your test results have reached them.
  5. These steps will have you well on your way to being a fully-licensed pharmacy technician. 
  6. To maintain your licensure, you must recertify every two years.  In order for your recertification to be approved, you must be able to show that you have taken twenty (20) continuing education hours, one of which must be in pharmacy law.
