Continuing Education Requirements for a Pharmacy Technician in West Virginia

West Virginia has simple rules regarding recertification.  A pharmacy technician must recertify their license every two years.  In that two-year period, the pharmacy technician must complete twenty (20) hours of continuing education units.  Up to 10 hours can be provided by simply working under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.  Other options available to a pharmacy technician seeking continuing education units are taking classes at a college or university; taking a program offered by a professional pharmacy association such as the National Pharmacy Technicians Association; or completing an accredited pharmacy training course.   The preferred association for completing continuing education units in West Virginia is the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.  While programs and classes offered by other entities may be approved after review, only those provided by the ASCP will automatically be accepted.  Certified pharmacy technicians who aggressively pursue continuing education often find themselves in line for early advancement to a supervisory or mentoring position and a higher salary.
