How to Become a Veterinary Technician in Wyoming

The best way to build a successful career as a veterinary technician (VT) in Wyoming is to first enroll in and graduate from one of the online or campus based program. This program must be at least 2 years in length and be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Most programs will require laboratory coursework and/or an internship at a VT clinic or area hospital.

By graduation from one of the AVMA approved online or campus based Wyoming vet tech programs, students qualify to sit for a Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). This exam is 4 hours in length and proves a student’s competency in veterinary technician skills, general knowledge, and responsibilities. The VTNE is sponsored by the American Association of State Veterinary Boards (AASVB), the scores of which must be filed with the Wyoming Veterinary Technician Association (WyVTA).

Upon successfully passing the VTNE, most vet techs opt to gain state certification. Individuals successfully acquiring certification are given the professional title of certified veterinary technician or CVT. Although certification is voluntary in Wyoming, it is strongly suggested for VTs desiring increased marketability, professional integrity, job security, and competitive wages. Furthermore, certification is a mandatory requirement for vet techs applying for Wyoming VTA membership. To achieve certification in Wyoming, obtain, complete, and submit an “Application for Certification? form from the WyVTA website. This form will request the following:

-Personal identifying information including: name, address, e-mail address, phone number(s), and work address
-VT program information including: name, address, graduation date, and contact phone number of the program
-Copy of VT program diploma
-Completed WyVTA membership application
