Yoga Instructor Certification in California - CA | How to Become

Become a Yoga Instructor in California - CA

This is an exciting time of change for the yoga teaching field. There are many styles of yoga practice. While the history of specialties is longer than the history of the United States, the practicing of recognizing them is relatively new.

How does one achieve yoga instructor certification in California? As in other states, national registration is granted by the Yoga Alliance.  Since 1999, the Yoga Alliance has been registering yoga teachers who meet their rigorous requirements. There is no requirement for a certifying exam at this time; the focus instead is on schooling. This entails completing an initial education program that includes minimum hours in various areas, from anatomy and physiology to teaching methodologies. Some programs are at the 200 hour level, others at the 500 hour level.

Yoga teachers may pursue specialties later. There are YA certification opportunities for those interested in working with expectant mothers or children and youth. Registered Yoga Teachers can take classes through other organizations to qualify as specialists in particular yoga styles.

Continuing education is needed to maintain certification.  Every three years, a teacher must do 30 hours of training activities.  At least 10 must be live.  The additional 20 can be earned in a variety of ways; for example, one might assist in producing training videos or classroom materials.
